James Williamson studied architecture, art, and English literature at Texas Tech University and the history and theory of architecture at the Architectural Association; he received his master of arts at Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has won numerous awards and honors including a first place award in the Shinkenchiku Competition for Japan Architect, two Graham Foundation grants, and an ACSA design award. 

His work has been published in numerous professional journals including Architectural Design: Games of Architecture, Japan Architect, Daedelus, A+U, and Journal of Architectural Education. This work has also been exhibited in a number of institutions throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean. 

Before coming to Cornell in 2001 he taught at Harvard University from 1991 to 1998. He has been a visiting professor at several institutions including The Rhode Island School of Design, Rice University, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and Columbia University. Williamson was also professor invitado at the Escuela de Arquitectura at the Universidad de Puerto Rico. He has received teaching awards at Cornell University and at the Universidad de Puerto Rico.
                          
Williamson is presently working on two books on architecture: SAVED! Architecture and Religion: the Continuity of the Religious Imagination in Contemporary Architecture[AG1] with Renata Hejduk and The Suicide Masques, a collection of essays on the architect John Hejduk.

Williamson is presently establishing a small inter-disciplinary practice: JPWMSON: Architecture + Allied Arts. He is at work on two books on architecture: Saved! Architecture and Religion: The Continuity of the Religious Imagination in Contemporary Architecture with Renata Hejduk and The Suicide Masques: Essays on the Work of John Hejduk, a collection of essays on the architect and educator John Hejduk. A recent essay, “Acropolis Now!” is included in the recently published Surrealism and Architecture.
