Interview Essay Guidelines

The B.Arch. interview essay, like the in-person interview evaluation, is often the first aspect of the application that is read, and as such is your opportunity to make a first impression. Use this essay to identify your voice, the things you care about, the very personal reasons that you are passionate about architecture, and the specific experiences that have led you to apply to Cornell.

Your B.Arch. interview essay should cover topics that you are not already discussing in either of your other application essays. It should be no more than two pages. You must submit the essay to aap-admissions@cornell.edu by the appropriate application deadline.

First-year deadlines:

  • Early Decision: November 1, 2016
  • Regular Decision: January 2, 2017

Transfer deadlines

  • Spring applicants: October 1, 2016
  • Fall applicants: March 1, 2017

It is very important to note that the majority of successful applicants to the B.Arch. program complete an in-person interview. The interview essay is only an appropriate alternative in cases where an applicant absolutely cannot schedule an in-person interview (due to distance, illness, or family emergency). Applicants who are close to Ithaca or have alumni interviewers in their area are expected to complete an in-person interview, not the essay.
