The Collegetown Hotel: An Urban Theatre, Second Year Studio Arch 201.
The extended stay hotel is an urban theatre which creates a new ground for the social activity in Collegetown. The typical condition of the site consists of vertical planes that line the intersection of College Avenue and Dryden Road. On the street level, activity flows seamlessly into these vertical planes. However, apartments dominate all those levels above the ground with no connection to the urban realm that flourishes below. The hotel exists as this typical vertical plane on its side, such that a facade is created underneath the building. Public space extends under the plinth of apartments where it ascends to the roof amid a concert of intersecting gazes.
